Halloween Craft Ideas and Treats

Crafts No Comments »

In time for Halloween I wanted to find some cheap and fun, crafty ways to decorate our windows for Halloween. I found this fun ideas on FamilyFun.com

House-o’-Lantern

What you will need:

  • Corrugated Cardboard
  • Black Markers
  • Craft Knife or Blade
  • Glue Stick
  • Orange Tissue Paper
  • Masking Tape
  • Lamp

Jack-o'-Lantern Haunted House Halloween Decoration

Not everyone has a cute window like this house but if you have a good size window and want to fill it out this is pretty easy.

1. Measure the window and cut the cardboard to fit. Draw a pumpkin face on it with a pencil and cut out with blade. Color around the cutout with black marker.

2. On the back side glue the orange tissue paper over the cutouts.

3. Tape the cardboard to the window and place the lamp below so it glows at night

Monster Mash Party Mix

I have done this one for years and it is always a hit and satisfies your sweet and salty cravings.

Ingredients:

Depending on how much you want to make or how sweet you want the mix, you can double the ingredients.

  • 1-2 bags popped popcorn  (10 cups)
  • 1 cup/bag plain M&M’s
  • 1 cup/bag Reese’s peanut butter Pieces
  • 14oz container of dry roasted peanuts
  • 1 cup raisins

Mix into large bowl. Makes about 15 cups.

Oakland Art Murmur

Art Collective, Crafts, Exhibition, small businesses, Special Event No Comments »

Oakland Art Murmur happens the first Friday of every Month!

Between 6-9pm you can roam the streets between Broadway and Telegraph from 22nd-26th where the main corridor of gallery’s food vendors and artists showcase their work. The Murmur goes all the way up to 65th but only a few galleries are open between there and 40th. Check out the  Calendar for events.

If you have art or clothing you want to sell you can do so or, if you are a musician, you can set up as well on 23rd Street by sending information to tdillman31@hotmail.com with subject “First Friday”.

Most galleries are open every Saturday afternoon as well. Check out the site for specifics.

I was impressed with the huge turnout of hipsters and older business types roaming the streets trying to push past each other in the tiny rooms of the galleries.

The Galleries that were of interest to me Vessel, FM, Mercury 20, and Johansson Projects.

Vessel: Used to be a Barn, very lovely space, great art, awesome deck with landscaped planters

FM: Fun whimsical art that will take you back to childhood fantasies.

Mercury 20: Great space with interactive art sculpture by Laura van Duran

Johannson Projects: loved the live music and grass on the ceiling

*Why doesn’t SF have this every month? Not sure, but at least each we have ARTSpan Open Studios. Look for more next week as we will be open October 9th and 10th at 143 Fillmore Street.

Come out Tuesday, September 7th from 5-8pm at the Museum of Craft and Folk Art to celebrate Alula Editions Launch with Bay Area artist Jason Jagel.

There will be beer from Oakland Brewery Linden Street Brewery and Hors D’oeuvres by  SF Chef Leif Hedendal.

What is Alula Editions? Helena Keeffe and Amber Cady started Alula Editions as a way to bring patterned textiles and contemporary art together in the form of a limited edition multiple.

This is a great way to come see samples and ask questions about what to expect when you subscribe and become a collector.

To read more about the subscription click on Alula Editions.

“We work with artists to create hand silkscreened textiles which we make into an edition of objects. The objects are designed in collaboration with each artist to compliment the themes and ideas present in the textiles and may be functional or sculptural.

We are interested in working with artists from all disciplines. Knowledge of repeat pattern design and previous textile experience are not necessary. We can work with any artist who feels that the aesthetic of silkscreen printing will compliment their practice.

Each artist is offered a $500 stipend for their work on the creation of the repeat pattern design. Alula Editions takes care of all production costs and labor. Artists also keep 3 of the editioned objects for themselves.” – From Alula Edtions.com/submissions

The Arts Collective 3rd Ward Thrives in Bushwick, Brooklyn – NYTimes.com.

Interesting article. More spaces are becoming popular in collaborative arts culture. It’s almost an Andy Warhol Factory Room, but for people who have to pay a fee to join with the ability to have access to multiple mediums in art. Printing, woodworking, weaving, jewelry design, welding, screen printing, and maybe most intriguing, a bartender who powers his blender by pedaling bicycle.  They were profitable even in a bad economy. I guess freelancing creative industry needs a time to thrive through collective big spaces. Talk about your connections!

Now, do any of you know of similar spaces who are making the million dollar marks in profits on the West Coast?

Attendance of 5,000! I don’t think so, but never-the-less it was fun. We were expecting to only get a half of a table and ended up with a full one. Yay! We were also told it was non vending….people did it anyway. Had I known we would have brought A LOT more stuff. You live you learn and in the process we still managed to get people interested. So here is to our first “exhibit” and some pictures of the other “exhibitors.”

Enjoy!
