Verena Tent Jewelry MakingVerena Tent Jewelry MakingVerena Tent Jewelry Making

Jewelry 1 Comment »

This week we are featuring a new Jewelry Artist. I had the pleasure of first meeting Verena from the Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center during our Business Planning Classes. Verena’s magic happens in her garage studio behind her house which is quite charmingly located in Albany.

How it Started:

It turns out Verena has always made jewelry and since a young age wanted to be a goldsmith. To finance that passion she used to be a non-profit manager of finances. Finally getting out of that field, she is pursuing her dream.

Inspiration:

Verena is fortunate in that she is able to do a lot of traveling. Originally from Germany, she goes home and visits as many museums as she can. “In almost all museums I own at least one piece…” she continued to smile and include that these pieces were made by her own hand. Being able to see the change in jewelry over the centuries in different countries is fascinating. Jewelry used to serves as a function, like a broach that held clothes together. Remember hat pins?

Materials:

Why do so many people use Sterling Silver? “It’s easy to work with, soft and malleable to shape and is beautiful either aged or polished.” Though she would prefer to work with more gold, it’s more expensive to buy and even harder to sell. Verena isn’t interested in gemstones. Instead, something as simple as casting grain has been a recent material she finds beautiful. Verena’s jewelry is playful, graceful and delicate. It is light and cheerful, and as she  describes its “understated character is intended to bring joy to the wearer as it brings joy to me, the maker.”

Here are some pictures to show her work space and jewelry.

Halloween Craft Ideas and Treats

Crafts No Comments »

In time for Halloween I wanted to find some cheap and fun, crafty ways to decorate our windows for Halloween. I found this fun ideas on FamilyFun.com

House-o’-Lantern

What you will need:

  • Corrugated Cardboard
  • Black Markers
  • Craft Knife or Blade
  • Glue Stick
  • Orange Tissue Paper
  • Masking Tape
  • Lamp

Jack-o'-Lantern Haunted House Halloween Decoration

Not everyone has a cute window like this house but if you have a good size window and want to fill it out this is pretty easy.

1. Measure the window and cut the cardboard to fit. Draw a pumpkin face on it with a pencil and cut out with blade. Color around the cutout with black marker.

2. On the back side glue the orange tissue paper over the cutouts.

3. Tape the cardboard to the window and place the lamp below so it glows at night

Monster Mash Party Mix

I have done this one for years and it is always a hit and satisfies your sweet and salty cravings.

Ingredients:

Depending on how much you want to make or how sweet you want the mix, you can double the ingredients.

  • 1-2 bags popped popcorn  (10 cups)
  • 1 cup/bag plain M&M’s
  • 1 cup/bag Reese’s peanut butter Pieces
  • 14oz container of dry roasted peanuts
  • 1 cup raisins

Mix into large bowl. Makes about 15 cups.

Open Studios Recap

Art Opening, Fairs & Festivals, Jewelery, Photography No Comments »

This past weekend was the kick off of Art Span: Open Studios for the entire month of October. Unfortunately, Fleet Week and Burning Man’s Decompression Party were also this past weekend leaving the public to various parts of the city. I tell ya, if you live in SF you have no excuse being bored!

Even though things were a bit slower for us, Lace Project sold jewelry and Gregory Bartning made connections with potential clients who want to work with him. Yay!

I thought I would post some pictures of the space in case you weren’t able to stop by and enjoy our famous Sangria.

As for this coming weekend it is Weekend 2 of Open Studios Open Saturday and Sunday 11am – 6pm.

Neighborhoods: Bayview, Excelsior, Financial District, North Beach, Potrero Hill, Russian Hill, SOMA, Tenderloin.

Capsule is also open this weekend. Every year Hayes Valley closes off the main streets down Octavia and Hayes Streets to honor Independent Designers and let the public shop. Open from 11am – 6pm you can see the list of designers and where they will be set up by clicking HERE. Looks like there are a lot of spots still available, so if you are a designer it isn’t too late to sign up!

Enjoy the pictures!

Oakland Art Murmur

Art Collective, Crafts, Exhibition, small businesses, Special Event No Comments »

Oakland Art Murmur happens the first Friday of every Month!

Between 6-9pm you can roam the streets between Broadway and Telegraph from 22nd-26th where the main corridor of gallery’s food vendors and artists showcase their work. The Murmur goes all the way up to 65th but only a few galleries are open between there and 40th. Check out the  Calendar for events.

If you have art or clothing you want to sell you can do so or, if you are a musician, you can set up as well on 23rd Street by sending information to tdillman31@hotmail.com with subject “First Friday”.

Most galleries are open every Saturday afternoon as well. Check out the site for specifics.

I was impressed with the huge turnout of hipsters and older business types roaming the streets trying to push past each other in the tiny rooms of the galleries.

The Galleries that were of interest to me Vessel, FM, Mercury 20, and Johansson Projects.

Vessel: Used to be a Barn, very lovely space, great art, awesome deck with landscaped planters

FM: Fun whimsical art that will take you back to childhood fantasies.

Mercury 20: Great space with interactive art sculpture by Laura van Duran

Johannson Projects: loved the live music and grass on the ceiling

*Why doesn’t SF have this every month? Not sure, but at least each we have ARTSpan Open Studios. Look for more next week as we will be open October 9th and 10th at 143 Fillmore Street.

1st Ever Plus Sized Models on Cat Walk during NY Fashion Week

Clothing, Fashion event 1 Comment »

US Size 14 and up, will be walking the Runway in Lincoln Centre in Manhattan during New York’s Fashion Week. This is a first for Plus Sized Models to take part in one of the biggest fashion events of the year.

“This show is a validation of the 62% of American women who are plus size” -Nancy Le Winter. Editorial director of OneStopPlus.com

Finally women with curves can relate to styles on the catwalk and see themselves wearing clothes that are fashionable. Older women tend to be curvier but it doesn’t mean they want to be less fashionable.

The economy is now in demand for carrying these plus sizes in their stores because the majority, two thirds of women, are plus size.

Some may debate they are celebrating obesity, others may view that fashion week is finally acknowledging “real women” sizes.

The event Runs until September 16th.

Please send me your thoughts!
